I have been to the bookstore, and I have learned that A Compendium of Wolf Fail has a sequel. It is called The Tempering of Men. Its cover depicts shirtless troll-battle. Because who needs a shirt when you're living in a cold climate and fighting clawy, fangy monsters? Protection from enemies and elements is for those silly, offensive slashers ( Read more... )

Also this sounds like a glorious trainwreck.

Well, they are fantasy writers who at least say they want to produce gender-questioning work. And they did start this trainwreck after reading Anne McCaffrey's bigger trainwreck and saying "We can do better than that," which is why I foolishly bought the first book in the first place. So I guess they started out on a side that overlaps with mine, hence my dismay.

Sadly, yes. The bar was set really, really low. Also, they teased me with pseudo-Norse setting and with the promise of WOLVES, and I went in expecting that wolves would at least make sense as wolves and hoping that they would do something with the RL Norse linking of magic/prophecy with women and with men who were perceived to be feminized in sexual relationships with other men and the linking of wolves with both feminized male magic practitioners on the one hand and dangerous criminals/outlaws on the other. It didn't happen, though, which puzzles the hell out of me because if you have that particular set of cultural quirks in the RL history of the culture you're basing your fantasy setting on, and you are making your characters bond with wolves in an attempt to comment on or outdo the WTF of Pernese dragonrider sexuality, HOW CAN YOU NOT USE WHAT'S ALREADY THERE?
