Very fascinating story! I liked very much the practicality that you dwelt on sometimes--Duncan figuring out how to clear the stream, where & how to bury the headless immortal; Matthew noticing the workmanship of the cabin, and the way Duncan tied knots. It was grounding, because people notice & have to deal with practicalities all the time.
I also liked the philosophy discussion, and Duncan accusing Matthew of sounding like a fortune cookie (obviously thinking of Methos). And poor Cory! To lose a child, and not just through accident or illness, but because of his immortality... Like Duncan though, I was simultaneously surprised Cory would make that commitment, and then seeing that, yeah, he'd be good with kids...
Well, gods know practicality is a survival requirement in the mountains! Glad you liked it!
 Yes, Duncan *was* thinking of Methos there. And definitely poor Cory. ::nodding:: That's seems to be a universal reaction: Cory? With kids? Huh, now that you say it...
For a Methos/Duncan shipper, I do love me some Duncan/Matthew.
Fascinating details about woodland survival in a landscape completely unfamiliar to me. (Australian bush is different again, even in the temperate zone.)
::laughing:: I think I'm the only Duncan/Matthew writer out there, so thank you!
And yeah, that's set in the Rockies, SW Colorado section. But they're up at about 10,000 feet there, and Duncan had been climbing higher when he heard the quickening. *Gorgeous* part of the world and difficult to survive in, short of paying a lot of attention. ::grins at you:: Which I strongly suspect is equally true of the Australian bush, if in completely different ways.
