Makes sense from what I've been reading, and doubly so for you with needing to avoid too much sun exposure. *hugs* How high is the prescription dose? I take between 5000 and 10,000 per day, and that just gets me into the normal range. D tends to be low in Crohns, so I suspect having auto-immune stuff sort of consumes the D, hence the need for a high dose.

50,000 twice a week. ::shrugs, faintly amused:: I'm suspect I may actually get told I don't get enough fat in my diet, too. Fat soluble vitamin and all.

Currently taking 2000 IU vitamin D daily, plus calcium in any digestible form I can find it (dairy products ftw) -- last check-up my doctor said I was still low....but improving.

*hugs rhi*

Because I have mal-absorbtion issues, I take a 50K D every day - Vitalady.com sells a high quality version of it non-prescription if you (or anyone) have need. It's best taken with calcium, A, E, K and/or Magnesium, and best *not* taken with your multi, or iron, copper or zinc. People tend to thwart their own levels by taking everything at once - some vitamins actually cancel each other out, like iron and calcium - so best spread over the course of the day.

One lovely thing I found lately when I greatly upped my calcium/E/magnesium - the hot flashes have all but gone completely away. So there's that. :-)

Youch!! 50K a day? Youch.

And thanks!! I'll check with my pharmacy to see what else I shouldn't take.

It's actually one fairly small pill - smaller than the calciums, certainly. :-) And my level was what yours was - 24 - and has been slowly inching up over the last year since I started the 50K. I'm now at 41, will not be happy until I'm over 50 at least.

As long as you spread the ADEKS/Calciums at least an hour, hour and a half away from the multis and/or the metals (iron, copper, etc) you're good. I'm now in the habit of taking vits with every single meal - I have three of those massive weekly pill organizers - and while it's a pain some times, my levels were in the toilet a year ago, and are all inching upwards now.

This getting older stuff is for the birds, innit? :-D
