Writing meme, day 8 -- original characters (OCs)

Ah. And we get to another question that has some really annoying built-in assumptions.

8 - Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

I've seen dice less loaded than that question... )

I love well written original characters (yours definitely stand out from the crowd) for the same reason I love fanfic.

There are times when I love a universe, but not the storyline the creators are telling.

Highlander and Harry Potter are two of my favorite universes, but I dislike the direction the creators took the stories.

Mary Sues, or Marty Stus are the product of bad writing, plain and simple.

Thanks! Yeah, sometimes, it's our world, so yes, it almost has to be about the same characters to be fanfic (NCIS, say, or Law & Order), but even there, you could write fic where other characters deal with aftermaths, or the set-up for the eps.

::groan:: Yeah. I think Rowling needed editors/more time on the last few books, to put it mildly. And no, really, we didn't need a darker, more brooding HL. Thanks anyway, but hell, no.
