What? Alternate brownie recipes are always useful this time of year, right? (And I've been promising to send this recipe to my ballet classmates for weeks now.)

Precisely! And these are death by chocolate, which makes them insanely useful this time of year: one batch will provide for a large office.

I am going to visit a friend who likes to bake, so this might go on our to-do list. Thanks!

Marriage Proposal Brownies*

2-2/12 cups of chocolate chips
1 cup sugar
1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter
3-4 tablespoons of water
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
1 1/4 cup flour
1 cup nuts

Preheat oven to 325, lightly grease a 13 x 9 pan.

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water and butter. Heat slowly until the butter melts. Then bring just to a boil and remove from heat. Add 1 1/2 cups of the chocolate chips to the hot mixture and stir until chips are melted and mixture is smooth.

Transfer chocolate mixture to bowl. Add vanilla and eggs, stirring well after each egg. Add flour and stir until combined. Stir in remaining chocolate chips and nuts. Pour in pan. Bake at 325 about 22 minutes.

Cool and cut into squares.

*These brownies have provoked five marriage proposals. Three of them from straight women :-)

I'm planning to try yours very soon. They look wonderful.

As I pull this out and go for ingredients, my one question is: semi-sweet or dark chocolate (60% or so) chips?

Thanks!

I use semi-sweet. Trader Joes has always worked well for me. Cheers!
