That's the best Dawson story I've read in a long time, Rhi. That unique no-nonsense approach, a man who recognizes danger and then throws himself in anyway. And yes, John really does make that kind of first impression. Robert Johnson? Really, asshole? *shakes head in disqust*
I'd seen Adam come in from an angle that wasn't really his starting point often enough to recognize it when I saw it. Oh yeah. Just like that.
I didn't know the casulaty stats for Bravo 9/1. Damn.
Thank you! Yeah, everyone I bitched to about John pissing Joe off so fast and she basically said that was John, all right. (Although as far as I can figure it out, the Winchesters take their aliases, half the time, from the last band they heard on the radio, that was still a mistake.) As for Bravo 9/1, yeah, that's what Wikipedia said. I winced, but well, both of Joe's legs and the nickname... I went with it. Thank you, I'm glad you liked it so much!
I don't know anything about SPN so I have to take that side of the story almost as original fiction. It doesn't matter, though. Both Joe and John are compelling, dangerous, and somehow very tired. Great read, Rhi!
Thanks! Yeah, they were both in dangerous mode while tired. Honestly, I'm impressed that didn't go worse, now that I think about it. Glad you liked it!
Excellent story, and I only have a very brief passing exposure to SPN. Both characters resonated within the tale, and *felt* true. Your Joe is awesome. Independent to a fault. Prickly. Guarded. Risk-taking. Want more.
Thank you also for the notes--I really like the delving into the Marine Corps backbone. The Walking Dead absolutely fits, and I agree Joe wasn't with them long--he was still a couple of shades too green after the scene in the hootch. He hadn't yet crisped all his ideals.
One small contribution--my dad, an old 10th Mountain Divisioner, not a Marine, claimed there were three stages of FU--SNAFU, TARFU, AND FUBAR. Three stages may have been too complicado for Marine sensibilities *g*. (TARFU--Things Are Really Fucked Up.)
::amused:: I pretty much know some of the 'everyone knows' stuff about SPN, and the eps with John. Then I got SPN betas to look John over and tell me if it was okay. And Joe was in gloriously snarky mode, wasn't he?
Yeah, I just couldn't buy that Joe had been there even long enough to make corporal, even at wartime rates. ::cheerful:: Thanks, I'll update the notes for that. TARFU is one I hardly ever hear and had completely forgotten.
Thanks, glad you liked it! Man, the sarcasm levels at times.... And yeah, Cord saved his life, but that scene with the raped woman, and Joe having to point out he owed Cord his life, not anyone else's, made me glad Joe didn't spend any more time with him. ::g:: And, I finally finished this!

Their dialog was brilliant.
Cord really was a bastard though although he got points for saving Joe early on.
