Fannish happy places

Jan 29, 2009 16:52

Gacked from Nestra because like her, I'd like more happy-making fannish stuff in my life just now...

Both because I haven't been posting much, and because I think most of us could use a happy place right now, why don't we resurrect one of those fandom memes ( Read more... )

writing: character discussions, cheerful things, fandoms: master li & number ten ox, fandoms: highlander

So... how about those Master Li books? ::G::

Specifically, what do you love about Master Li himself?

I love the slight flaw in his character. Raised by monks, he came in first on the scholar's tests.... and went back to scholarship because crime was too easy. (Although the trouble he had getting that one idiot general killed was dreadful.) Besides, you have to love a man who takes on the Duke of Ch'in for 5,000 coppers -- which had already been spent on congee and wine.

Oh, and what do you like about Jade Pearl?

I haven't re-read it recently, and it's not on the shelf where it should be ::G::, so I'm having to work from memory here...

I love the way she loves life with complete abandon -- she wakes up in the morning, looks to see if there's anyone in the bed with her who wants to make love, and if not then she goes off to see what delights the day holds... and I get the impression that the day *always* held delights for her.

I also love the fact that she is "probably the least selfish Goddess of them all" (and what a delightful irony that Miser Shen fell in love with her) -- someone gave her a chest filled with gold, and she immediately gave it to one of her maids, because she could see that the maid would enjoy it. The only things she coveted were pearls and jade, and I suspect that was only because her subconscious was associating them with her divine identity, and creating a craving for them.

I know you think I'm going to say Methos, but I'm not. *g* How about Duncan MacLeod?

::Laughing:: You're right, I did expect Methos. Hmm. I love the way Duncan makes friends, ones who contact him at odd intervals. I love his relationship with Connor, the way they pick on each other and God help anyone else who does. I love the back and forth of his relationships with Fitz, and Amanda, Darius. And, of the shallow, the man looks *damn* good doing katas. (Not to mention the glorious fun of all the different weapons and fighting styles we've seen him use over the years.)

So, what do you like about Matthew?

Matthew McCormick! Guh! What's not to love? Starting with the obvious, the man is gorgeous. And I love his voice.

Less than obvious, I love the fact that he's a lawman. I love the fact that he took Carl in and taught him; gave him an opportunity for a better life as an immortal. I love the fact that he's loyal, even if that meant being loyal to his father-in-law and his family. I love the fact that he's hard headed, but not too hard headed to change his mind and do the right thing.

I love the chemistry he had with a certain Highlander although I know DM already is in love with another Immortal guy.

Because I know you have the books, Aral Vorkosigan.

Oh, Lord, what don't I like about Aral Vorkosigan. I love his his refusal to lose a war by winning one battle, his grasp of essentials, the way he holds his ground even when he's slipping away from arguments. I love his integrity, in all its myriad appearances, and the way expediency is the last option for him. He's glorious and I would kill for the opportunity to spend a week talking to him.

So what do you like about Lord Auditor or Professora Vorthys?

Have you read The Sharing Knife series? If so I'd love to see your take on Fawn.

If not, how about Vachon?

I'm reading book four now, having taken two books to decide I really like it. (It's Bujold, I tried the first two.) I like Fawn's determination, and her refusal to let embarrassment stop her if she thinks something is important. I like her stubbornness and her insistence on working and learning. And I love her solid grip on common sense and sticking to the point.

Hmm. What do you like about Dag or Berry? (Although I'm becoming ridiculously fond of Arkady in this fourth book, and will be interested to hear if you like him.)

I haven't gotten the 4th book yet (next paycheck). However, I'm like you it took me until the 3rd book book to really get into the universe.

I like Dag for his decision to not take the easy path, and I love the deep groundwork imagery (although I confess to thinking about it being the Force). I like they way he's decided to change the world rather than just complain about it.

What do you like best about Number Ten Ox? ♥

I love the way he's proud of people who are what they are: Master Li's knowledge and his own peasant status, Jade Pearl's delight in exploring life. I adore the way he doesn't hesitate to admit his own mistakes in his narratives, and dear gods, that sentence from the Story of the Stone! "In the first place I don't understand where [the story] begins and in the second place I'm not sure it has an ending and in the third place even if I understood the ending it wouldn't do me any good because I don't understand the beginning in the first place." And last, you have to love a man who's so modest about all the lovely women with whom he keeps ending up in bed!

So what do you like about the abbot of Ox's village? Or, if you'd rather, about Moon Boy?
