Okay, the end of the Line War (the fights, I mean), the thing that took it from great to magnificent was the way you defied dramatic conventions in favor of real-world sense. Winners and losers were determined not just by their fighting skills, but by the choices made over the years and the quality of the friends and enemies garnered thereby. (Just off the top of my head: a critical point in Johannes' fight with Aidan was when he parried with his left hand and got cut because he was wearing an inferior gauntlet, because he'd had to abandon his good gear when he'd died unexpectedly, because he'd annoyed the Lone Gunmen by going after one of their friends, who was one of Aidan's students.)
I'm seeing the same thing here. Why did Matthew believe Sasha when he said "aliens"? Because of Mulder. Two smart, dangerous men are trusting each other much faster than dramatic convention says they should -- because they are smart, dangerous men, and you thought through what that meant better than ( ... )
