Too neat not to mention

One day soon, when it's cooler, I plan to take a camera and get my own pictures of this. But for now, if you want to see an art/learning project such as I'd never heard of before, go here to see pictures of the sidewalk in front of the Memphis Main Branch Library ( Read more... )

Rhi, I was reading this and that at your site today and noticed this -

Jirina Petesceu
5' 6"; short, thick blond hair; blue eyes; prominent cheekbones in a Slavic face. The Slavic/Germanic wide-shouldered, full-chested build. Born in 1384 in Odessa, on the Black Sea; died in 1409.

This can't be right. Odessa was founded just a bit over 200 years ago. If you meant a Greek colony - it also had a different name at the times you're talking about...

And Petesceu is definitely a Romanian name, not Slavic.

::g:: The name I can claim is a frequent alias; I clearly buggered up on Odessa and need to see what was at the site earlier. Thanks!

You're welcome. :) But for someone who wants to stay unnoticed on all the territory of the ex-USSR taking up a Romanian name is not a best thing to do. There are not a lot of them around and Romanians had a bit of an ill reputation there. Although I understand it's kinda hard to change her name now. :)

She could be Greek, there are still some villages around this area that are completely Greek and there always have been there. ut then she wouldn't be looking German/Slavic...

It's actually a very interesting area, with a very rich history and quite a diverse population. But in times you're speaking about it was completely under Crimea Tatar Khannat (um, don't know if it's correct in English, a state where the title of a supreme ruler is Khan) and, I don't remember for sure, but I think they were wassals of the Turkish Empire. If there were Slavs there at the time, they were slaves.
