Why Pilates won out over writing, and a query about pairing shorthand

Mar 09, 2005 13:04

Writing looks like a damn sight more fun than finding out (again) how much little of the Pilates exercises I can still do. (Yes, it'll get better, but that's then, and this is now. ::shrug::) But when there's a cast iron, claw-footed tub waiting for you at the end of it, and it's cold and rainy out, well, those exercises suddenly look much more ( Read more... )

::purr:: Great tub. I love it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that's annoying, too. ::cheerful:: And here I thought I was alone in this distaste....

I agree on portmanteau names--they're silly, and they're hard to interpret (although within individual fandoms there's always a tendency to use shorthand, so that M/K means one thing in XF and something else in HL, and if you didn't know the fandoms you'd still be confused). I try not to use them, but they're so prevalent in Alias that it's hard to avoid it.

::g:: I tend to mix them up, yes, and then there's Sleeps With Coyote where M/K is Methos/Krycek, most likely....

See? It's all about the insider language! It's just that I prefer acronyms to cutesy squished-together names.

(I blame the X-Files for this, but then, I blame the X-Files for everything.)

Well, there is plenty of room for blame, there, Lady knows!

Cliquish, yes--but I've also always gotten the vague feeling they were invented/embraced by people who wanted to be able to discuss their fanfic with friends in public without shame. You know, talk to someone in the checkout aisle about your latest Snarry and not have the mother of three behind you going, "OMG SNAPE AND HARRY WOULD NOT SLEEP TOGETHER."

But this could just be my deep-seated need to find reasons for things.

::wry:: Sorry, I think it's partly cliqueish and partly 'cutesy'. But I'd kinda like you to be right and me be wrong....

Oh, believe me, my rational explanation does not make me dislike the phenomenon one wit less.

It pretty much drives me crazy, and I refuse to use them. *g*

And yay, Pilates! I have a great intructor at my gym, but I haven't gone in months, and the more I don't go the more I'm scared to go back, because ow. *g*

::nodding:: The closest I come is the initials (D/M, or D/MM, say), and I usually only do that in fandom emails. But whee! Not just me!

Yeah, it's a definite ow. I'm doing floor exercises with a DVD and a truly vicious piece of equipment called 'the summit -- a hemisphere that you can attach resistance bands to, or balance on. Ow, ow, may I just repeat, ow? Good luck if you go back!
