Title: Cell Visit
Category: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Trey gets a visitor while he's in his cell. Takes place after The OC episode of The Rager.
A/N: This is my first fic for The OC fandom. But Trey/Marissa is hot, so I had to write it.

"Trey."

He swallows hard at the sound of her voice. Then he looks up from where he is sitting in his cell.

She's standing there, looking angelic like usual. She's wearing a white sundress and a pink purse is slung over her shoulder. Her golden hair is in pigtails, which is so adorable on her.

"Hey, Marissa," he says coolly, standing up. "Where's Ryan?"

Marissa avoids his eyes and Trey understands. He should have known by now that his little brother has no faith in him. "I'm sorry," Marissa says awkwardly when seeing his hurt expression.

Trey clears his throat. He doesn't want her to know how much it bothers him. "No, it's okay," he lies. "Thank you for coming, though." He gives her a smile, genuinely happy to see her.

Marissa clutches the cell bars. She is trying to ignore her body's response to that wonderful smile. "Look," she says, "you didn't have to cover for me."

Trey's smile widens. "And have you put behind bars? Couldn't let that happen."

"Trey - "

"It was the least I could do," he says, not wanting her to interrupt. "Come on, Marissa, you've helped me so much since I've been here."

"Ryan thinks you did it because you brought the drugs," Marissa tells him. Trey scoffs - of course Ryan would think that. He looks back at Marissa, who is staring at him unblinkingly, obviously waiting for an explanation.

Anger bubbles inside of him. "What do you want me to say?" he half shouts. But he knows exactly what she wants to hear. She wants him to deny it. She wants him to say that he didn't bring the drugs.

Marissa, taken aback by his sudden outburst, steps back. She avoids his eyes.

Trey sighs. "Sorry. I didn't mean to yell," he says softly. "But why do I have to keep proving my innocence? Just because I stole a car once?" Marissa's eyes meet his. Suddenly, he wants to reassure her. "I didn't...okay?"

He watches as her cheeks redden with embarrasment. So she was in agreement with Ryan in thinking that he had brought the drugs to the party. But he doesn't feel angry anymore. Now he just feels empty.

"Trey, I didn't mean - "

"Look, it's bad enough Ry doesn't believe in me." He is horrified to hear how scratchy his voice sounds. "But now the one person who has believed in me all along is turning her back on me, too?"

Marissa tries to meet his eyes again, but he is looking at the floor, feeling defeated. "Listen to me, Trey, I do believe in you, okay? I just...I just had to hear it."

"Why?" he says, offended. "Can't you feel it? I'm not a bad person!"

Marissa knows that on some level, he is no longer talking about the drugs. "Yes, I can feel it!" she says, resisting the urge to touch his hair.

"Then why?"

Marissa closes her eyes, then sighs deeply. "For Ryan's sake."

"I see."

"Please don't be mad at me," she begs.

"No, I get it," he says roughly. "It's always got to be about Ryan."

"You have to understand."

"Hey, uh, do you know when Sandy's going to drop by?" He changes the subject.

"Later on today," says Marissa, knowing that they aren't ever going to talk about this again.

"Oh, good."

There is a silence. He doesn't look at her and she doesn't look at him.

Finally, Trey breaks the silence. "It was...uh, well I wouldn't say 'nice' talking to you again, but...well, you know."

Marissa's shoulders slump. "I'll see you when you get out, Trey."

"Yeah."

"And I'll uh...watch over your apartment for you," she adds, trying to get him to smile. He doesn't.

"And my lava lamp?" he says dryly.

"And your lava lamp." She sighs, looking at him once again for stepping back.

"Bye Marissa," he says, glancing at her.

It's only a quick glance, but she can see the hurt in his eyes. She swallows hard.

"Goodbye, Trey."
