Music binding

Jul 02, 2007 14:28

I finally broke down and ordered some materials from Archival Products so that I can sew my single-signature music into pamphlet binders. Now I need to go shopping somewhere local for an awl, an upholstery needle, some heavy-weight thread, and a staple-extractor (gentler than a staple-remover).

binding, music

ooo. *surfing about* NICE.

Did you catch my post over the weekend? I may need some of those same items you'll be hunting up.

I did. I would be more likely to just put diaries in a pH-neutral box rather than try to bind them, unless you're thinking of making a preservation copy to bind or something like that?

I haven't quite decided. I have not yet seen the condition of them yet - I don't know what I'll encounter. Hopefully it wont be too bad.
One concern is I know others will want access to them, and they are bound to be extremely fragile. I have a cousin who is also interested. I'm not sure how to handle that just yet.

I would take photographs of the pages and put them in a flickr account (or similar service) that family members can have shared access to. Labor intensive, though...

I suppose it's heresy to suggest spiral or comb bindings? Yes, they're plastic, but I like 'em because they sit flat when opened. Sewing sounds like a huge amount of work? (Or is that the idea?)

Sewing isn't that much work. It's about 5 minutes per item, and the preservation is much better. And it can be done while watching television or listening to NPR or whatnot.

Spiral binding works better (I think) with materials that are larger than a single signature. It's an irreversible process, so I'm always a little hesitant to go that route with things that aren't photocopies.

Yes, I'm aware of them. The only time I went there looking for something specific they didn't carry what I wanted, but I may have to give them another try.

Two options: You can come over to my place (or I visit you) where you can use my tools to and thread to do the binding. If I keep looking, I should even find my book leather. I have everything, including press, awl, threads, and experience.

Your other option is to go to:
Book Making Needs
665 Third Street, Ste. 335
San Francisco, CA 94107

I usually pick up my supplies online or in Berkeley, but they should have what you are looking for.
