A Sorry! board is tons of fun just waiting to be unleashed. Monopoly is fun too. I would concur with the UNO deck suggestion as well. If you want hours of play fun there's always Risk or the ever g33ky Axis & Allies.
People seem torn about whether I should regress to high school geekdom (e.g. Axis & Allies) or all the way back to grade school naivite (e.g. Candyland). When I say "people," I'm just projecting, of course.
Well, if you want more adult-oriented games, you could always just break out a deck of cards for a nice round of strip poker. ;)
There's always Yahtzee! too. I dunno, I always considered board games to be more fun rather than necessarily intellectual. Which games or genre(s) of games do you enjoy playing?
I like generic board games and party games -- the ones that I mentioned owning in my post are examples of this.
I also like the fantasy-themed ones that many of us played in high school. I don't actually want to take up AD&D again, but board games and card games that involve the same sorts of mythological appeal would be good. Some of the things published by TSR and Games Workshop, for example.
For that matter, I'd love to learn to play bridge. *looks around* I'll just leave that open for you to make a punchline... : )
mmm ... Alice and Wonderland ... that would be cool!
If you desperate need a chess set, I can give you one of mine (I have 3 of them). Except the one that has the Boston Red Sox vs. the New York Yankees, I had to carry that one in my luggage from Boston :)

Are you trying to turn me on? Or should I assume it's pre-Jeter?
I don't play chess often enough to own a set, really. If I owned one, it would be mostly to affirm my identification with the bourgeousie (sp?) -- I would therefore want to buy a high-end set to display in the living room or parlour. (This is kind of like how some families own a piano even though no one plays.) They have some lovely hand-painted Alice in Wonderland themed chess sets on the high street shoppes in London that I have my eye on. : )
