A Revisit to Clash of Kings

So as you know, I have quite a bit of spare time to fill, what with nothing new to read and all.  So once again, I am rereading A Song of Ice and Fire.  Right now, I am about halfway through A Clash of Kings.  And you know what I realized?

This book is totally boring.

Seriously, I like this series, as you have probably already guessed.  But almost ( Read more... )

catelyn, arya, clash of kings, george r.r. martin, daenerys, stark, song of ice and fire

I run games, as in, I am a roleplayer and a gamemaster, and so is George. When you want to build an epic tale and you want it to matter, you need context. You have to have context. The beginning of the series is boring because there aren't any dramatic events, true, but that is because GRRM is building the world for you. Teaching you about what matters and what doesn't; so when Cat lets the Kinslayer go, when the Imp decides to be a good ruler, when the Red Wedding (!) happens, you understand the significance of those things.

Surely the clothing and food descriptions would go straight to the production designers, and not turn up in the dialogue? "Lo! Thou wastrel varlet, thou hast spilt watery cabbage broth upon thy Myrish mantle." Inconceivable.

These are the kind of trite meaningless comments GRRM isn't interested in reading. Neither are we.

Wow, you mean that you aren't interested in reading the stuff that you obviously just read? And that you're so not interested in reading it that you had to take time to announce just how not interested in it you are?

Be glad you don't follow manga, man...I've been waiting, like, 5 years for CLAMP to get done with their current silly series and go back to X... (not to mention Yami no Matsuei's eight-year-long lapse) but, well, I prefer they take their time and do it well than do it quickly and bad. I prefer he takes the time he needs to write it well and awesome as it is (and it may be that I, unlike you, am pretty used to waiting for authors to get their works done ( ... )

im with the poster above... keep the sex in. im about 300 pages into clash of kings and i just cant make up my mind about this series. half the characters suck and are painful to read. some are good, but i just don't know if it's enough to justify the time investment.

but hearing that there are scenes of teenage girls fingering each other ahead, i may press on.
