AFFC Critique #1: The Nicknames

Dec 26, 2008 07:42

Greetings and happy holidays to all.  Sorry for the delay in posting, but as you can probably understand, Joey and I have quite a busy holiday season, what with all the family functions, mall openings, and rehab reunions to attend.  But as promised, here is the first in what will probably be many critiques on various aspects of The Incredible Bulk' ( Read more... )

I've just noticed that our man is listed as an 'Instructor' at the Clarion Writers' Workshop at UC San Diego in July 2010. Do you think they will give him the Time Management class or will they just put him in charge of refreshments?

Ah . . . that's what he's working on now. Recognizing his glacial speed, he is now preparing materials for the class. Setting aside all other unimportant writing, so he will be ready and first in line for the donuts and coffee.

Sometimes I like to refer to myself in the third person.

Also, I do a LOT of drugs.

AFFC's needed some mention here for awhile, and the nicfanfic was the logical way to start.

I suppose if you get called Fat Fuck and Tubby Bitch for the first 60 years of your life, you are probably going to invent characters with names of their own.

I honestly never noticed this at first...but now it's blatantly obvious. I mean, Darkstar for instance. WHY? That sounds like a Sci-Fi weapon or alien or something. Then again, GRRM loves his sci-fi. I'm sure he watches BSG reruns while eating his KFC.

There were a lot of nicknames in the first three books, the Greatjon, the Young Wolf, the Kingslayer, the Imp, Littlefinger, The King in _______, one of Dany's three hundred nicknames, the Hound, the Mountain, etc. But these were logical, obvious nicknames that were likely to come into use by common people. But DARKSTAR? THE SAND SNAKES? Nimble Dick? Who the fuck would call themself Nimble Dick or Darkstar?

So true. I never understood Dany's 15 nicknames. The Stormborn? I was born on the 16th of March, so you can call me The Day before St. Patrick's day Born, or perhaps the day after the Ides of March born.

The nicknames have never bothered me, not even in AFFC. That's a book that has far worse problems than nicknames and I trust you'll get to those later on.

Having said I love the nicknames you have for GRRM. So alright it's insulting and it's really nobody's business how he looks or how much he eats but I can't help but laugh at "Abominable doughman" , "Jiggles all the way"or "Incredible Bulk".

"The Feastmaster" just about killed me when i read it. It has been one of me and Doza13's past times to come up with similar nicknames for Delay Mignon. Never thought to create an LJ which is nothing more than a thinly veiled front for the sharing of these nicknames. I say bravo to this...
