Yesterday's post seems to have triggered a huge outpouring of comments, and I see the same issues being discussed all over the internet, in a hundred different places. I remember back in the glory days of 1998 when we didn't have to ask permission to link stuff! We just did it and lawyers be damned!

Seriously, you make some excellent points. I suspect the repression is a lot more subtle than just having to show an id everywhere you go. I never used to think twice before telling someone I was an ACLU cardholder. I never used to think twice before mentioning I was non-Christian. But I'm an innocent, so I have nothing to hide, right? Right?
