Hugo Thoughts: Best Professional Editor, Long Form

Feb 26, 2017 17:03

We are creeping closer and closer to the close of Hugo nominations for That Finnish Worldcon. I hope that all of you reading this who are eligible to nominate will do so. Even if you only nominated one or two of your favorite things in one or two categories, that's better than not nominating at all ( Read more... )

Long Form Editors ext_4033714 February 27 2017, 01:51:03 UTC
I appreciate your recommendations, but I need to know what 2016 novels these editors edited, in order to be able to nominate them.

Hugo Best Editor, Long Form, is not a career award or a lifetime achievement award -- it is for work done in 2016.

Is there any way to find out that information? Thanks.

Technically, yes... but it has been treated like a career award for mist if its existsnce. See my post from last year for details on that point.

I have listed the publishers and imprints for each of them. That's what they edited.

Re: British editors, I believe the lone exception is Lee Harris, who got a nom a few years ago. I believe he's no longer eligible in long form due to his move from Angry Robot to tor.com but is worth consideration in short form instead.

Baffles the mind how Anne was only nominated the one time. She certainly deserves a Hugo. Honestly she deserves enough of them that she could build a cool fort.
Hopefully, I get to work with her one day with any luck.
Jane and Joe are people I know nothing about however. I'm trying to be more actively involved as an author when it comes to the science fiction and fantasy community along with the awards themselves. I'll do some research about Jane and Joe to see if I agree.
Thanks as always GRRM.

How does someone become an editor? They are not necessarily authors, right?
And how does editing works? You discuss your ideas about the book before or just write and then send it to the editor to review or...?

Some editors are authors first... John W. Campbell, Ben Bova, Stanley Schmidt, Gardner Dozois... that's a very long list.

Some are not. That's a long list too.

As to how editing works... that's a BIG subject, and not one I have the time to address. Sorry. A degree sometimes helps... in literature, say... but is not strictly necessary by any means, and can sometimes actually hurt.

Thank you for the reply :)

So there is not really a pattern about anything hehehe

Maybe, when you have the time, I think a lot of people would appreciate if you could talk a little bit about what's like to be a writer/editor.
I think, as in all professions, there is a big difference between what people think it is and how it really is.
