For my moviegoing public: Cloverfield

Feb 04, 2008 23:41

Cloverfield, in 10 words or less (not counting these), is about a gigantic alien stomping through Manhattan, Godzilla-style. Which tells you nothing at all about why I thought this movie was so very awesome, why I almost went back to see it a second time while I was pointedly ignoring the Super Bowl, why I can't WAIT for the DVD (perhaps even ( Read more... )

I still haven't seen it, but I've read every single review I can find on it. Including yours.

I know, scene by scene, exactly what happens. And I still want to watch it.

But I have severe issues with motion sickness and I'm afraid that I won't be able to sit through it. I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet and give it a shot.

Girl, you need to get some extra-strength Dramamine or something. It is 100% worth it.

Actually, I think Verizon is working on a deal to install magic dohickeys in subway stations so you can get reception. If you have Verizon. And if you're at a station, anyway...between stations, not so much.

I hadn't heard that. Whenever Tery goes back to CT, the only way she can get a signal is to climb a tree or something. It doesn't help that we're on T-Mobile.

Lol at climbing a tree. I have T-Mobile too, and um, yeah. I've been with them for about five years now, and I love them, but the reception in NYC sucks.

Armed with this knowledge, I'll enjoy the DVD that much more pretending that the magic doohickeys have already been installed.

Not sure if you knew, but adding two cents anyways.... Apparently the offshoot aliens were parasites, like aquatic lice of some sort of blood sucking thingie.

Also, did you stay until after the credits? There's apparently a nice litte sound bite at the end. I won't say it unless you want to know.

Didn't know that, but neat. I also read in an interview that the more subtle purpose they serve is to create a threat that could be anywhere, as opposed to the big beastie that could be seen a mile away.

We stayed through the credits but were busily discussing the movie. I heard the something but not what it was. I read it was heavy breathing?

I've heard so many things about Cloverfield, but the whole shaky, rocking camera action thing makes me hesitant to go see it. The last time I saw a movie with similar shakiness (The Constant Gardener, with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Wiesz), I got sick to my stomach. lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. And I hope Tery won't kill me for saying this, but...I'm glad the Giants won. Go NY, woo! *runs and hides behind Elaine*

Oh, and thank you for the comment you left on my entry about my friend who had colon cancer. I meant to thank you much sooner, but she passed away at that same time, and then things have been nuts since I started my second semester of school. But I really appreciate what you said, and you were right--knowing that you were reading it did help. So thanks. :)

I'm afraid Tery might have ruined the movie for me, after-the-fact. I waited to read your post because I thought I might convince Sean to see the movie with me (obviously he didn't, his loss), and I'm glad I did. I'm crushed, tell her that.

I mean, I thought the same thing about the camera battery, and the empty Subway (my brother pointed out that maybe the offshoot-things had killed everyone that'd been in the tunnel, but then how would they have been dragged away so quickly? Hey, maybe the subway's just not that busy of a Saturday). There were plenty of times when I asked myself (and everyone around me) "Why aren't they running yet?" Still, I hadn't thought of all the things she pointed out. Seeing all of them at once is quite a blow.

the technique becomes instead a brilliant way of keeping you there in the middle of things rather than removed and detached.I'm glad you pointed that out. This is one of the main selling points of the movie for me. Also, I love the way it's set up so that the cameraman provides comic relief during ( ... )

No no no, please don't tell me she ruined it for you. Her drab ultra-realism is my cross to bear, not yours ( ... )

Who? What? Where are you reading these conjectures and pointings-out? I WANT TO SPECULATE WILDLY.

I just Googled things like "Cloverfield splash" and "Cloverfield last scene". Naturally I can't find any of the sites I specifically visited, particularly one set up to look like an official government research document or something.

Here are a couple of good ones I found quickly:

Damn, now I want to see this again. Tabby still dodging my calls.
