Martin Luther King once said, "I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a ( Read more... )

I don't suppose it's going to sound very helpful, but at least you're on your way there in the US. The leaps taken are quite enormous already, even if the people whom this affects would obviously want (and quite rightly so) more, sooner.

We're a long way away from even the possibility of things like civil unions (although that might be because there's no reason here not to have marriages right away - being the most atheist country in the world, marriage isn't anything to do with religion here). It's not even talked about. I get it in some ways - it wasn't that long ago when gay sex was a criminal offence, and it takes time for people to change their attitudes - but on the other hand, I do rather wish people would just realise that... well, it's not going to hurt them if other people get married, is it? Grrr ( ... )

I know that there are plenty of countries and places where things are much worse than they are in the US, and I certainly didn't take your message the wrong way ( ... )

Nah, it's not whinging when it's about something as basic as human rights.

And yeah, I get what you mean. I suppose the whole federal vs state business is something I don't really think about - looks like while that sort of separation might be a good thing sometimes, it most definitely isn't with things like this. :-/

I've heard comments from some gay American friends that they figure Obama might not want to go all out this term - that if he's re-elected, then he might go for the more "unpopular" policies with more energy (what with it not mattering for his re-election then and all). Obviously I have no idea, and even if that were his plan, that would still mean several years like this.

It hurts, that's for sure.

*hugs*
