Writing and stuff and gifts oh my!

Sep 09, 2018 22:05

Trying to write the next chapter of Mongoose plus writing my thingy for the gift fest is blowing my damn mind!

Anyone finding it a toddle?

Also...how long are the fics generally expected to be?

Hugs to all.

Nah, I can't imagine.. I for instance know already what kind of topic I want to create in art, but have no idea yet how to pull it off..

As for the lengtht of fics, if you look back at the masterlists of earlier Fests, it differs from maybe 1400 words to multi chaptered stories from peeps who got so inspired they couldn't stop. So it's completely up to you and your Muse (and your amount of time, of course).

Good luck! *hugging you back*

Thank you!!!

I went and looked at the master list. One fic was nearly 40 THOUSAND......

Yes, but then someone got very much carried away ;) Don't get discouraged by that, it is in no sense a requirement. It is your effort that counts, not the amount of words..

And sometimes, some authors even say in their AN that an epilogue will follow after the fest (for instance if they lack time or inspiration to end it exactly in the way they had in mind). If you discuss things like that with the mods, they are always willing to accomodate you.

I've seen gift fics ranging from a couple thousand words to 40k+.

Er, I don't speak Australian very well. :-) Is "toddle" an easy or trivial thing? If that's what it means, then no, I'm not finding it a toddle. For one thing, I'm a bit distracted at the moment, for reasons you know about. For another thing, I was assigned to produce something that's not my long suit. I've written two different prologues -- neither of which will be published -- just to try to get my mind into the right framework. So I have 2000 words so far, but nothing actually usable. :-)

The rules of the gift fest say that the minimum is a thousand words, but there is no maximum. Ideally, the length would be determined by how many words your idea required, but given how busy you are, the length will probably be determined by how much time you can squeeze out. :-) As long as it's over 1000 words, you'll be in compliance with the fest rules!

*hug* Best of luck!

Yes! Toddle is really easy. :)

I’m so impressed you’ve even cranked out something given current...um...distractions. You’re a machine!

Thanks for the luck. I’ll take you track and play around a bit first. : D

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with hundreds of unusable words!

You are definitely not the only one! But the science fiction writer Roger Zelazney used to write a lot of stuff about his characters that he never intended to publish, because he thought his stories were richer if he knew things about the characters that never made it into the book. So writing things you don't plan to use isn't necessarily a bad thing! Zelazney wrote a number of excellent books, so it worked for him.

~dons modly hat~

The minimum word count for fics is 1,000 words. Anything beyond that is up to you.

The giftfest is supposed to be fun. Don't stress yourself so much.
