Dear Fellow Cyclists...

Lately, because this behaviour has become more common and nearly had a (literally) significant impact on me quite a few times, I had been wondering if the Highway Code had changed sometime in the last 20 years.

But, as it turns out, it is still the case that: 64. You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement. Laws HA 1835 sect 72 & R(S)A 1984, sect 129Not only ( Read more... )

I have lights, I wear bright colours.

I cycle on the pavement when the lorries and buses are in my cycle lane and I've got no place else to go (usually no more than a few hundred metres). I do it slowly and considerately and would much rather be cycling on the road where I can cycle at pace.

Hear, hear.

The ones who don't even bother to ring a bell or give any other warning as they're charging up behind you are the worst culprits.

I have more sympathy for the ones who give ample warning and a "thank you" nod to pedestrians who get out their way. They still shouldn't be doing it though.

I was taught "if you're on a bicycle, you're a vehicle. If you want to use the pavement, get off your bike & push it". I don't see why that shouldn't apply to everyone, no matter where or when in the country you are & no matter what else is happening on the road. If you want to be a vehicle, with the additional speed of travel that allows you, use the road. If you're upset that a lorry or bus is using a bit of road and you can't overtake it, get off the bike (turning yourself into a pedestrian), and use the pavement.

Or you could act like an actual vehicle & join the queue.

No excuse. Never ride on the pavement unless it is specifically marked as being a cycle lane.
