Movie Review - Iron Man 3

The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) is a shadowy terrorist intent on bombing the US and its strategic outposts, while Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) is a molecular biologist working on the "Extremis" genetic enhancements of dubious morality. Iron Man Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), aided only by his girlfriend and business partner Pepper Potts (Gwyneth ( Read more... )

I wouldn't object to seeing it again ;o)

(Though I guess it depends what else is on...)

I felt that Stark only called the arc reactor an electromagnet in order to skip over explaining incredibly sophisticated physics to a child, and the arc reactor does power an electromagnet.

It did seem that every suit had been fitted with their own arc reactors, because internal battery power alone wouldn't have sustained them long enough to do what they do. Also... Igor!!! *cough* What?! Hulkbuster armour makes me happy.

I liked the inclusion of AIM, and thought the take on the Mandarin was interesting, but wasn't keen on the ending. Presumably Avengers 2 will require him to suit up again. And I think I'll probably like IM3 more when that happens.

To do the boring IRL bit, RDJ's Marvel contract is now fulfilled so for the moment there is no guarantee he'll sign on for more... (From what I've heard/read Marvel want to sign him for another brace of films while he wants to go movie-by-movie moving forward... also I assume a bigger slice of the bank pie I suspect)...

In saying that he's one of the shining lights that makes those films so very entertaining so I do hope he's back :)

As for the film, I liked it a lot - for once the trailer gave almost nothing of the main plot away which I thought was very well done.

He doesn't need to explain the physics to a child. "It's an arc reactor. It's like a really powerful battery which powers my suits, and runs an electromagnet which keeps shrapnel out of my heart".

Yeah, I couldn't tell why or how he was "charging" the suits from some external source with a couple of HT/jumper cables. I mean, his Mark I chest piece rector put out power in the gigawatt range, and that was barely enough to run his suit at the end of Iron Man I (The Mk. III suit?). With his suits getting upgrades, he was needing to draw more and more power from the chest piece during IM II. So how/why was he charging his latest suit, presumably with a multigigawatt draw, through cables he found in the kid's garage?!? From where - the municipal power supply for a small home/business? Clearly his "electromagnet" chest piece is now *incapable* of powering his suits, even if needed.

Bah! :-)

If I was to be picky I would say they clearly have some form of autonomous power source such as an embedded arc reactor or some other form of locally stored power for autonomous operation.

Maybe they run off their onboard as a primary and Stark's arc reactor as a secondary/(charge/augment) the onboard power supply (A lot of the more power-hungry laptops work like this with the mains/battery and as a result the battery being missing or flat means the laptop won't run at anything like full tilt even plugged into the mains).

As such maybe the mains hookup in the kids workshop was just to get enough juice back into the suit that it could get back to normal operations (think trickle-charge). Additionally two other points of consideration:

1) the Mark 47 was a prototype suit so not exactly a production environment and...
2) it's a movie, and it suited the plotline ;)

I thought it was easily the best Iron Man movie, was grinning the whole time (except when I almost cried).
