Today, I learned how to give shots. The vet recommended that I start giving my dog Adequon, a supplement which requires a subcutaneous injection. The only way this is affordable is to learn to give the injections yourself ( Read more... )

Congratulations! Is that Nell in your avatar?

I'm curious, how did the vet tell you to sterilize the injection site through all the fur?

Actually, that is my older dog (Kit)'s mom. She and Kit very pretty show dogs.

Nell is the Snape-like one that is herding ducks in my HPN signature. Snape would definitely be a border collie bred like Nell if he were a dog - from working lines, with the strong-eyed signature "BC" crouching style, indicating intense concentration! I think Snape is more likely to need Valium (or at least a beer) than Adequon, though!

They didn't tell me I had to sterilize the injection site. Is that something I should ask about? I didn't think about it, but when they give shots in the office they do dab something on the site beforehand. Thanks!

Perhaps you don't need to sterilize the injection site, then. I just know that in people, any injection site needs to be cleaned with an alcohol swab first. I've always wondered what they do for animals with fur in the way. Perhaps the answer is nothing!

That's great, grizel! I think I would be too chicken to do that. My son and I took our new puppy to the Vet on Monday, and she needed two shots. The Vet took out this huge needle and my son closed his eyes and wouldn't watch. The puppy didn't even seem to notice anything, but my son turned pale and nearly fainted, lol.

Good for you, Grizel. I was asked to help a friend give subcutaneous fluids to her cat, and even though I just did the holding, I found the process rather creepy. I've given injections myself a couple of times, and while I was scared at first, once I realized that it doesn't bother the animal I felt okay about it.

I think if the neddle's sterile, you don't have to worry about the site of injection. No one said anything about that to me.

About the Puppy: I haven't had a dog in 20 years, but my youngest has been begging for a new pet after his gerbil died, and some friends wanted to give away their puppies. So that's how we got our little dog, which is probably part beagle/part Jack Russel terrier - a mutt. I need to get my daughter to take her picture with a digital camera so I can upload it. She has a little pointed face and floppy ears, and she's tan and white. So far she has been a charming dream dog, gentle and funny - I can't believe my good luck. I think she's probably part Crup, because she charms anyone who sees her. *lol* My husband didn't want a dog at all, but he loves her now!

She sounds like a cute mix. The beagle part might tone the Jack Russell part down a little, which could be a good thing. My herding instructor owned a Jack Russell who was so smart, she taught herself to herd by watching the border collies. Eventually, she had to be placed in another home because she got hooked and could slip under the fencing!

I can't wait to see the puppy's picture.
