lol I've been reading so much I totally neglected the internet for a while. So I picked up "Deluxe" in the bookstore on Sunday and have just finally finished it. Wow. It was a very interesting read. I'm halfway through "The Cult of Luxury Brand" as well. The books really make me think about how Asia is the world's centre of luxury nowadays. Yes, ( Read more... )

I'm gonna start mem-ing your entries on this topic because your ramblings are incredibly interesting and enlightening! I'm so removed from this ideology and this way of living because status spending has never been in my thought process. I tried once and that was enough for me. The farthest I got was a LV watch, again from the same cousin who offered me a Coach bag. And what you've said about the celebrities is so incredibly true. They're as hot a commodity as the materials they are selling. What I wonder is, so many 1st world nations have these epicenters of consumerism. Will we ever go back to, hmmm, less status driven lives? I don't think there's any way to go back and if we steadily go up (like you said about the $1,000 bag), then how do we function as a global economy? It's utterly stupid to overspend on such useless items, in my opinion. Really, is a bag that carries your empty pocketbook really the top priority? Oh, the irony. It looks nice and your bag is better than that other girl's bag. But how is that functionable? I'm ( ... )

Wow I'm amazed you found my rambling interesting haha.

I think overspending on luxury is a traditional practice in humankind's history already. There are hundreds of stories of entire empires collapsing because their royalties spent so lavishly on palaces and precious stones and luxurious dresses and endless parties. Back then it was a practice bound by class though. Nowadays when everything is mass-marketed and widely accessible, the luxury craze spreads faster than avian flu in a chicken farm. Personally I think this industry doesn't affect the global economy much nowadays though, because sales of luxury goods most often drop dramatically in case of economic crisis. Unless it's Asia where you have to upkeep your ~standard~ lol. Of course, it's not about a bag anymore, what everyone's buying here is lifestyle and prestige. People want glamour and social approval, so they throw money out the window for that.

lol I'm certainly not a writer, but I'm glad you liked it. :D

lol I totally thought it was epic stylist fail at first, too. Then I saw pictures of the runway show and was like "ahhh, I see. ...these clothes look better on the runway than on SuJu."

I'm glad you found this interesting haha!
