Kirk not hardly. A spoiled Kirk maybe. I was really open to them mucking with the time line. It was just poorly done. With some better writing they could gotten the effect without the glaring mistakes and holes they had. How about young spock in the movie not knowing anything about how blackholes could be made (makes sense). But when he is about the to ram Old Spock's spacecraft into the romulan ship, he indicates to the computer that he knows the risk of "red matter" getting hit. It not even internally consistent. Kirk going from Cadet to Captain by the end the movie no way. Better writing would have had Kirk & Spock as rival commanders. Then the bump to captain would have made sense. BTW Spock got promoted by Abrams. Under Pike he was Lt. Commander.

You wouldn't have a problem if I made a movie in which a 3rd year Officer Cadet from West Point engaged in gross insurrection against a Lt. Colonel(Major if Spock was a Lt. Commander) only to to be rewarded with a promotion to Colonel? I'm sorry that is just bad writing.
And the bad science is another matter. Your allowed some handwavium. But if your going to do Science Fiction you have to get some basic science right. Otherwise it is just space opera.

Having not seen the movie myself I would agree that a cadet to colonel jump in rank isn't normal but in a battlefield situation it is not unknown. However Star Trek has always been and will ever be "Space Opera!"
look we all know kirk is a bad ass .. they just issues him some bitches.. usaly green because those are the dirty girls.. and a star ship.... that is how i rember star trek anyway
