That's really sad about what happened to your student. It sounds a little like culture shock especially when spanking is frowned upon in the states. Maybe you can speak to a supervisor if it becomes out of hand? And maybe the school can send out a notice to parents back home stating that hitting is advised against? Unfortunately it's very predominant in Asian culture :/

I'm not really opposed to spanking when it comes to behaviour issues, but hitting a preschool student for making a simple spelling mistake in a foreign language is rather uncomfortable considering my role in it as the teacher who is marking the mistakes. I'm a rather strict teacher, but I know in public school teachers themselves can be physical with the students too. So this problem will probably escalate for this girl, because she's one of the lowest level students that I teach. She tries, but she's just not smart ( ... )
