Interrogating the Programs populating this brave new Grid had only gotten Rinzler so far. Discontented with a lack of explanation for why the old order had been overset, he'd taken to the heights and their untouched dataflows, giving up the pretext of being just another new citizen while he hunted for more information.

He kept the cloak, though. He liked the cloak.

It was while sifting through the high currents in the empty sectors of the city that he ran across a thread of almost-self data that bore investigating. Climbing hand-over-hand down the face of an abandoned building, he judged his height above the ledge below, let go, dropped--and landed facing himself.

Rinzler had more or less given up on understanding the change in order. And halfway despaired of solving it. The streets were filled with blue and white circuits, users travelled without care or concern, and he'd more than once felt the chaotic edge of an ISO's steps as he'd tracked and searched.
