7. superstar
He knows that he’s in danger of making her the sun of his existence, something to revolve his life around-something to exist for. She’s different from the other force pulling at him; her tug is gentle, but sure; along the curve of her hidden smile she threatens to change his orbit. She doesn’t ask much of him; in fact, she demands nothing. It’s because of this that he finds himself offering more and more. It’s because of this that she attracts him closer and closer.
He feels torn between two forces, where the only difference between friends and lovers is the blister of her kiss.
14. radio-cassette player
“The radio is awful,” he whispers into her ear.
“What will you do about it?” she whispers back.
“I’ll invent a device which lets you play your own recorded music,” he tells her, breath warm on her shoulder. “Something portable.”
“What will you call it?” she asks, worrying his ear gently.
“A cassette,” he gasps. “That’s the portable part. It’ll need some kind of… player.” He pauses to shift into a more comfortable position. “Then I’ll combine it with the radio and it’ll be a radio-cassette player.”
Her exhalation sounds almost like a laugh. “And you’ll install them in cars?”
“Where else? It’s the best place for them.” He levers himself up so that he can grin down at her. “And I’ll bring you here everyday so I can show you what a great invention it is.”
She decides this is the best time to silence him with a kiss.
27. overflow
Hawkeye tries not to think about them.
Them.
As in, the two of them.
She realizes that they don’t make sense.
That he doesn’t make sense.
To her.
That her mind can’t wrap around how they fit together.
That she will never understand why this man, why at this time,
why his kiss
makes her forget her place and maybe even
her dreams.
When his imaginary presence
begins to haunt her at work,
she starts to fear that he will
invade
her thoughts and from there work his way
permanently
into her heart.
She doesn’t think that she can bear that.
She doesn’t think she can love him.
Fully.
The more she tries
not
to think about it,
the more her thoughts
betray
her and like a river
crash one into
another
like a poem
filled with
enjambment.
