Title: A Love Not Mundane*
Fandom: Mai HiME
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Entire series
Featured Character: Fujino Shizuru/Kuga Natsuki
Disclaimer: SUNRISE's. Not mine.
Summary: A story of abiding love and extraordinary circumstances.
After many failed attempts at finding Mr. Right, Natsuki finally conceded and decided that Shizuru, still loyal after these many years and probably willing to be her Sugar Mommy now that she'd run through her inheritance after one too many wrecked motorcycles, was her best bet for a significant other. They were the most devoted couple that no one knew about, since both figured that living in the closet was the safest option now that they were an item--though Natsuki often complained about the broom handle that poked into her back when she tried turning to get into a more comfortable position. Unfortunately, living in the closet was also the fastest route to lesbian bed death ("bed" being somewhat figurative since the futon couldn't fit in the closet with them), though Shizuru secretly suspected that Natsuki didn't mind this state of affairs since the younger woman never let her get farther than a quick grope under her shirt. Nonetheless, each considered herself happy and lucky in her own way, though it took a few years before Shizuru realized that putting a cap on Natsuki's credit card would keep them both from starving and for Natsuki to realize that living in the closet was the perfect excuse to find other places to sleep. Thus they lived happily ever after, in their extraordinary, atypical way.
The End.
*The "Mundane" in the title can be substituted with the following words: Unexceptional, Typical, Ordinary, Boring, or any other adjective denoting banality.
I'm pretty sure the first question I will get is, "This is a joke, right?" Yes, and all of you that had expected something serious can go ahead and be angry at me. (Or laugh with me. I'd prefer that.) But I will reserve the right to be as equally annoyed with
this. While it wouldn't surprise me to know that there are others who share these sentiments, I think the tone here is a bit presumptuous, if not entirely backhanded compliment.
I won't comment much on "Crossroads Schemata" (and, to a much lesser extent, "A Tangential Affair") except to say that, yes, I purposefully presented the fic in a misleading manner in order to lure in unsuspecting readers and that, ultimately, it was the fic I wanted to write. That said, I don't think I owe the characters of Shizuru and Natsuki anything--or necessarily believe that they deserve each other. If they were still inspiring me, I'd write about them. Yet there are other writers still inspired by these characters who are, in fact, writing their love story in a manner that is extraordinary in plot and circumstances. It wasn't the route I saw for the characters, nor is it the vein of writing that I've dabbled in. Anyone who has read the Drabbles and liked them has realized, I hope, that on some level those little drabblets were all about normalizing Natsuki and Shizuru. I think the Internet and fandom is big enough for all sorts of ideas, yes? And even if I've stopped writing, Mai HiME is a fandom that hasn't died yet, with or without me.
