Runaways, Kushiel's Scion

Comic: Runaways (Brian K. Vaughan + Adrian Alphona) made me sad. But I'll keep reading because I'm curious and I find certain characters interesting enough to keep my attention. The art tends to be all over the place, but what can you do when the artist may change from issue to issue? Sometimes it's really very pretty and, despite the changing ( Read more... )

NOOOOOOOOOO HAMLET HAMLET HAMLET!

*has been utterly reduced to incoherent yelling*

...and Bell Jar is awesomely disturbing read. I read "Daddy" out loud at a poetry reading yesterday...aw Plath...

*more incoherent yelling and quoting Shakespeare*

And there's an awesomely old 70's version of A Midsummers Night's Dream with Dame Judi Dench...occasionally it turns multi-colored and Puck sticks his tongue out for no apparent reason.

It's vaguely traumatizing, but awesome.

I haven't gotten around to Hamlet because I wanted light love comedy. Thus, avoiding the tragedies. Like Hamlet

70s version? Sounds like something infinitely more interesting if you're on drugs.

Naw, if you want on drugs Hamlet either get the new Ethan Hawke version (most famous speech in English lit...in a Blockbuster...?) or the Kenneth Branaugh (sp...?) one with about a million cameos and a completely random sex scene (I watched it in school. I think that was the only time my English class was awake.)

The drug trip one is Midsummers Night's Dream. I don't like the new version of that with Michelle Pfieffer (I am so celebrity saavy I can't spell any of their names)...Titania looks like birthday surprise Barbie or something...

Ah, but for truly traumatizing Shakespeare movies...ask Amy about The Tempest...

The Bell Jar... very good book, but can be depressing. Not because of writting style :D

Kushiel's Scion seems so disappointing... Why I am not surprised? (although I had some hope:>).Carey had her moment in the first volume, now she just follows the path of majority fantasy-many-volumes-writers. Down. So sad TT.

Kenneth Branagh is the master of Shakesperae screening. Probably:D

Yes, the Bell Jar is sad. Well, Plath was depressed herself. =( The bad reviews of the book drove her to suicide, I believe.

Hm. Scion may pay off. It depends on the reader. I didn't find Imriel as engaging as Phedre as a narrator and considering that the entire book is from his POV, this isn't a good thing. At least there's some political intrigue and diplomacy and careful court maneuverings. We have enough "Let's go save the world with our big swords!" fantasy books.

Oh? I do not know of this Kenneth Branagh.

Never heard that. She should've known how big impact her writing can have: my friend who used to feel weak when seeing blood, passed oud reading some bloody scene from the Bell Jar. I was impressed :D

Don't say Conan the Barbarian is boring ;D
No, really, intrigues and diplomacy are surely strong points of this story, but still not enough to swoon over them. Phedre is this invention which gets my attention :D.

=D. No, you do.
I kept picturing the movie version, which I've seen clips of. Don John was Keanu Reeves *shudder* and Beatrice was Emma Thompson =D
He was the director here and played Benedick :D. He also directed some other Shakesperae plays.

Ah, the Runaways...I browse up on it now and again but I've had a particular disenchantment for the title ever since they made Alex go all 'mole'. I find I keep comparing Wilder to David Allyene (Prodigy) from the (new) New Mutants group in that other than for smarts, they're kinda...useless, that and they acted too emo for their own good sometimes. At least they got the hawt Asian girlfirends (at least for a time Alex), who can kick all kinds of ass.

As for Nico going 'bad', she seems the most afraid that it will be her since she has the 'witchblood'. And I have to admire the writers for showing Nico's struggle and her trying to change herself and her supposed 'fate' of darkness. (ie praying and reading the Bible). Although I wonder if the writers have watched enough anime to try and make Gert go all nuts, either her or Molly.

Poor Alex. His plan would've worked if he hadn't offered Nico anything and kept her frozen. Alas, love was his weakness. And the need to be personally responsible, which got his ass fried. Although the smart people do have skills in some groups. From my browsing through the random comic 'verses, I think Oracle gets to flex her mind in Birds of Prey for all that she's stuck in a wheelchair; that's the impression I get anyway. As for Nico, it seems that the way her magic works requires her to think bad thoughts. When Chase uses the Staff of One, he pretty much says he's never going to try it again. Then again, she never had formal training in the Dark Arts and her parents pretty much told her that she had a lot to learn. She seems to do pretty well regardless. Funny, though, how Chase, without any powers other than piloting the Leapfrog, was still an integral part of the group. His street smarts and punk attitude came in handy. Ah, Chase ( ... )

If Chase actually used his brains (and had a fully loaded shop like say Forge's) he could probably make some nifty stuff. I bet his first order of buisness would be to recreate those 'strip' goggles he found in his dad's shop early on. XD

Even with knowing that brains are a very large part of the group dynamic, as what happened with Alex turning against the rest of the Runaways, you shouldn't have the brain dynamic focused on just one person. After a time, the team members should have found their own niches and situations where they are the point/key person and go from there. I think that Nico's doing a good job considering that she's not an official leader (well, last time I checked, she wasn't).

Heh, I can see Molly joining up with the New X-Men, Nico going to study with Dr. Strange or someone. The others, I'm not so sure about. ^^;

Who wrote it? Ah, ninkasa. Yes, back when RoyAi felt small. I'm surprised other authors weren't mentioned that were big around that time.

Pretty big fandom subset now. Still, though. Of all the coincidences.

LOL No, I knew about it when ninkasa originally wrote it. I kind of wish she had rec'd some other fic though. Not one of my personal favorites; and definitely not fitting with the manga canon now. Oh, manga canon, you screw me so hard.
