I don't think the problem is intelligence. I think students are not used to consequences and responsibility. The coddling that goes on in the public school system leads students to expect tons of extra credit opportunities that take less time than regular assignments. I give clear directions, take time to explain one-on-one if needed, offer feedback before they turn in the final drafts, and often donate my free time to be available if they need extra help. That's far more than most of my colleagues do, but some students simply don't take the necessary time to do the projects well.
Teaching at the college level isn't just about teaching students to do that level of work. My job also involves training these students to function in the adult business world. Sometimes, they resist things like accountability and personal responsibility.
