I have always personally subscribed to the second one: the idea that we are responsible for determining the meaning of our own lives. But then again I don't like any suggestion that my life is not my own to control. Pre-destination bothers me a lot. I fully believe in the individuality of how we each experience life because it so directly impacts how we behave and react to situations.

Also: I subscribe to the latter, although sometimes I can't help but feeling like certain people I am meant to meet, I'm meant to make certain associations, etc. I don't believe major life events are fated - it's our choices that determine the larger motions of our lives - but I just can't completely rule out a small degree of "it's meant to be."

I believe that there is some pre-determination based on things like where you were born, are you good looking, etc. You must admit that certain traits pass from generation to genertation; talents, genetics, etc. And knowing that you may be prone to a certain disease may force you into being more careful with your health or in some cases more reckless as a result. I think this is choice, but who can really say that you didn't choose that path because of some other trait inherited from your great-great-great-whatever. Just my 2cents at 5:10am.

Erin stole my response. =P

I also believe that meaning - in life, in whatever - is up to us to determine. Something can only have meaning or value if we ascribe meaning or value to it. I've said before that meaning does not descend from the heavens on a divine Post-It note, and the notion of a "pre-existing truth" would indicate One Ultimate Truth, in which I don't believe. I think truth is subjective (not to sound like Fox News here - oh wait, that's facts, nevermind. ;P) It's one of the reasons I don't believe in what JP calls the "One True Wayism" of religion - I think there are many truths, and many facets to those many truths, that mean different things to different people. Some people never find meaning in life, despite being witness to all its glory; some people find meaning in a bowl of Cheerios. It's really up to us. And like Erin said, I'm really, really, really not comfortable with the idea of pre-destination, that my life is not my own ( ... )

I'm not saying it's ALL genetics, but I think that inherent traits have some role in how we percieve situations and as a result make choices. <--amazed that that sounds somewhat intelligent. And that's where the train left the station without me. Good night folks. Wait...I do believe that we make our own choices. And I agree that we are not wholly defined by our genetics/heritage/what have you. I just think that it has some role that we don't have much control over.
