"It's not going to stop 'til you wise up."

Yesterday, I wrote 1,179 words on the final chapter (oh, thank fuck) of Red Delicious. Probably, I'm no more than four days, at most, from The End. But, I have to stop today and make all the line edits to the ms. for the Centipede Press edition of The Drowning Girl: A Memoir. It occurs to me, just now, that I need to make sure that this is the ( Read more... )

I think it's so cool that you dig mmorpg's! I tried out the video game part of Defiance but like you felt it more of a console solo play type game. I will check out the show and hope you keep writing about the mmorpg's you play.

Actually...I don't know that I "dig" them. It's love-hate, at best. I need the RPG, to avoid being me as much as possible. But I hate "gaming culture," and I hate how much of my life I waste gaming. I only occasionally enjoy gaming.

Yes.

Sharks, both prehistoric and 'modern' are fascinating creatures; it seems they evolved and adapted long ago to an optimal degree for survival and haven't had to change all that much in the interim. I like how they have denticles (aren't those like modified teeth?!)instead of scales and how they have so many teeth if they lose a few they have plenty more behind those which just slot right into place. Their cartilaginous skeletons, the lack of a swim bladder, their exquisite sense of smell, how some are born live and some from 'eggs' or egg sacks make them very interesting creatures to me. I'm the first to admit my knowledge is rudimentary, but when I do themed lessons on ocean life (I teach prekindergarten)I always include at least one day devoted to sharks and rays. Also, as an aside concerning your years in paleontology, today we were doing wooden dinosaur puzzles in my classroom as well as other animal puzzles (I was attempting a lesson in categorizing these animals as extinct/not extinct and also as reptiles/amphibians/mammals/ ( ... )

Nope. The origin of denticles (which may has evolved in shark/bony fish relatives) is still being debated, but denticle-like structures are probably older than teeth.

Unfortunately, the gender gap in science, while improving, remains vast.

Yes, my youngest daughter is 24 and an electrical engineer; she went to a fairly small university and was one of very few females in that field of study on this particular campus. She often complained about her male peers who acted as if they knew more than she did or tried to relegate her to lesser tasks on group or partner projects; but she's developed a thicker skin and is learning to stand up for herself at her place of work now whenever her bosses try to give more r&d contracts to the guys that work there over the female employees.

Re: "The Prayer of Ninety Cats"

Brilliant, as always. Thank you for the link. (and moreso, for having written the story!)

How do you track the changes between versions?

It's not as complicated as it might sound. I read aloud from a new print out of the manuscript, while Spooky follows along, reading a printed copy of the novel. Desired changes are made in red ink on the new print out, then typed into a new MS Word version of the ms., which is sent to the publisher. Simple. But tedious.

I've been hearing that Aimee Mann song in my head a lot lately. And I keep telling her, "I know, Aimee. I'm fucking working on it."
