I was also frankly baffled that they never made the whole "by the man who created 'Tarzan'" pitch - perhaps someone has that in copyright somehow? Whatever the reason, I think it would have helped people conceptualize a bit better.
I suspect that this is going to be one of those films that comes into its own in a few years, when people have taken the time to see it themselves and critics are no longer afraid to say that a genuinely entertaining film is also good.

Like you, I was excited when I saw the first promo, but it was probably because I was a fan of Burroughs when I was a child as well.

I think it was just a dumb move, and never mind all the fucking blockbusters that Stanton's responsible for.
