Took the "Break in Case of Emergency" pill this morning at five ayem, that tricksy gem in my prescription pharmacoepia, that I so very rarely touch. Because it hits within mere minutes, and it hits like a freight train (the passenger sort would only stun) and wears off about eighteen hours later. I slept more than 8.5 hours, a sleep which ( Read more... )

Brown Bird remains the finest Appalachian-Roots-Yiddish-Doom-Folk band anywhere on Earth. oldfossil59 December 18 2011, 19:37:29 UTC
Damn straight Skippy! I'm so glad they were able to rock your socks off after their long tour. I wanted to see them in Norfolk, but a 5 hour trip (each way) during the work week just didn't make it feasible. I am envious, though.

I don't get the texting/social network thing either-my stepdaughter's head would explode if her phone's not with reach for more then five minutes.

And THIS is what I do not get.

I can't imagine tweeting during a performance although the one time I saw the Kronos Quartet I teared up at one point and when I used to go to the opera I would get jacked on a solo or for a really great ensemble performance like when I saw Xerces. I could imagine myself saying something during intermission.

I have been known to update FB during the Shirley Jackson Awards. Is that a service or is healing needed?

I think I'd just call it an unnecessary distraction.

Basically, I think people - and especially younger people - have become so "connected," they exist in a perpetual state of disconnect, incapable of focusing, immersion, or existing in the moment. It must be a hollow life.

Once she broke her phone, and didn't have access to one for about 24 hours. Her level of anxiety was absurd and nerve-wracking for the whole household. I've heard some doctors label the "condition" as "cellphone anxiety." Another fine contribution of the technological age.

Any time I hear of these absurd new "disorders," I'm reminded of the fabrication of "Space Invaders Wrist" in the early '80s.

Exactly. I wonder how many of the kids from the 60's and 70's would have been diagnosed as ADHD? Or several other "disorders" that have been "discovered" the past 30 years.

I was very pleased to see the APA sink "Asperger's syndrome" back into general autism.

Sometimes I believe that some members of the scientific community strive to discover new disorders instead of trying to find the missing pieces of the old puzzle.

Not to change the subject, but do you have any interest in the Centipede Press edition of Karl Edward Wagner: Masters of the Weird Tale? He was a favorite of mine for quite awhile, but I don't know if you care for his works or not.

Thank you. But nah. Not really. Never much cared for his fiction. Though, bit of trivia: the first panel I ever did, in 1994, he was also on it.

Damn...I really want to see Brown Bird...I was performing in Tiverton last night, so that wouldn't have worked, but next time they perform in the area, I definitely want to see them!
