I work on Capitol Hill, and most of us assumed it was a bomb in the caphill subway between the office buildings and congress. or construction. or a big truck. I, in my infinite wisdom and stellar survival skills, asked facebook if there was an earthquake when I realized it probably wasn't the staffer in the next cube twitching his foot violently.

I think the blasé West Coast attitude towards earthquakes is the result of the evolution of a necessary coping mechanism via a sort of denial of the inevitable cataclysm.
