The Question & the Book

Apr 14, 2011 20:14

So...did I just make a poor choice for the Question @ Hand this time? I've gotten good answers, but far below the usual number. Which strikes me odd. But. I am persistent. If nothing else. So, I ask again ( Read more... )

I can't speak to everyone else out there in Internet-land, but I can say for myself that the reason I haven't responded is that I would not like to press you into servitude without your full open-eyed consent...

What can I say, I guess I'm just a softie like that?

But I will go and answer anyway, since you ask so nicely.

Now I'm hoping someone's inspired by your comment to write an answer where the person answering and the imagined-Caitlin that person is describing are clearly working together, the one asking the other permission to go to certain places, make it more of a true collaboration. May I do...this to you? Heck, there could be a whole story in there. Or at least a vignette.

(I've already tried answering, so I'm not going to be the one, but it's got to be a good prompt for somebody.)

I agree that would be cool!

Hey, your name sounds familiar. I might know you, or some of my friends might know you. I'm not certain.

(ETA: ...or I could just be misguessing 'cos I see you in docbrite's comments section sometimes and when I clicked your clickable people head just now, it said you lived in Portland and were going to Stumptown Comics Fest - a set of particulars that resemble some not insignificant percentage of my social circle.)

*back from the profile page* There's some overlap: Mia (copperwise) here in Portland, other people elsewhere, and yep I comment over at docbrite's and will visit Stumptown, where friends of mine are tabling. And I know a fair number of Portland podcasters. Watch it turn out that we have run into/run past each other at some point...

(Edited to add the one symbol that makes a difference!)

I just finished reading 'The Book Thief' and absolutely loved it - a very good recommendation. I read mostly on the train to and from work and couldn't stop myself from crying quite a few times; it's a good thing commuters don't pay attention to anyone else. I do find it funny how the USA and UK editions have such different covers, but seeing as how I prefer the UK cover (how can you not love death dancing?) I guess the marketing people got something right.

I've never answered the Question @ Hand before, because I am somehow afraid of doing it wrong. (Don't laugh.) I do have an idea for this one, though. When should we send them by?

I've started reading The Book Thief even though I still haven't finished The Orange Eats Creeps. They're both intriguing reads and yet complete opposite in ... I don't know the right word, voice perhaps. I'm having trouble with The Orange Eats Creeps because the prose is so fractured and schizophrenic, following the story is like a game of Whack-A-Mole, from the mole's perspective. The Book Thief, however, reads almost like poetry, like a dark lullaby. It has a smooth, lyrical flow to it that I'm absolutely loving.

I'm formulating an answer for the Question @ Hand, but I'm working several crazy deadlines through the fog of a terrible head cold, so finding a few minutes of clarity to organize my thoughts and jot them down has been an issue. Hopefully this weekend though.
