No rest for the wicked (as true today as...)

I was in bed at a decent hour last night. Before 2:30 ayem. And I almost fell asleep about an hour later. But then, inexplicably, I was awake again, despite the pills, despite genuine exhaustion. I lay there, and lay there, and lay there, and at 4:30 ayem I took a second tab of zolpidem tartrate, which did the trick. And still is doing the trick. ( Read more... )

Last night, after a little rp and some work on the HE sim, we finished reading Clive Barker's "Cabal."

I read that book way, WAY too early, when I was about ten or eleven, and still have that same copy, a battered mass-market I'd bugged my mom for after seeing Nightbreed. The sex went straight over my head, but it solidified something in me that became my lifelong fascination and love affair with the idea of the Other.

Clive Barker shaped my childhood. *blinks* That explains a whole lot, actually.

I can't say he shaped me, because I was already in my twenties when I started reading him (1986). But he definitely helped keep me moving in the right direction.

I loved Cabal for the concept of the nightbreed. Both the book and the Movie Nightbreed left me wanting a bit, but part of my loves them for bringing in the Breed.

Yep. The movie, I think, falls apart (and this likely wasn't Barker's fault), but, even so, it presents some exquisite images.

Have you tried warm milk?

It would take an awful lot to fill the bathtub, and I'm not sure that Spooky would be into this, but...

Oh, you mean for sleep.

Among the gems are his insight that sex scenes - in order to be successful - should concern themselves more with the characters' relationship than physical descriptions of the plumbing.

Yes!

The closing scene of Chantal Ackerman's JE, TU,IL, ELLE being a case in point ...

Sadly, I've seen none of Ackerman's films.

I'm a fan of the masturbation scene in Cabal, as well as the comics they did when Nightbreed came out.

Just wanted to let you know I finished DoH last night. It was fantastic.
