"While doubling entendres with the voicings..."

Jun 24, 2008 13:27

So, I awoke at 11 ayem this morning -- an hour or two later than I'd intended -- to connectivity issues with the wireless, and as we have no landline, we were stuck in a holding pattern while Spooky spoke with the landlord, and the landlord spoke back, and the landlord spoke with Cox and our downstairs neighbor. And finally I picked up the modem, ( Read more... )

What else about yesterday? We started hanging pictures.

I owe you picture-hanging . . .

Happy birthday, Spooky!

I did the same thing with 2010 a few years back with the Czarina: I caught it back in 1984 just so I didn't have to sit through another viewing of David Lynch's Dune, and hadn't caught it again until 2005. Much like Dune, it was made at an interesting cusp, just before CGI allowed a lot of effects possibilities that weren't possible with the then-standard techniques. You're right in how badly the ending has aged, but considering it was a prime product of the height of Reagan's Cold War, it's not all that surprising.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the Czarina had never seen it, and that was combined with her hatred of 2001. She liked 2010 enough that she wants to give 2001 another try: she tried to watch it with her ex-husband, so I suspect that we have some transferrence issues here.

No, not surprising. Agreed.

The photographs of the shore are wonderful (more, please) and an enchanting look into an entirely new world - our local shoreline is so boring compared to yours, but perhaps I haven't looked in the right place/way. I have saved several of the photos and can't decide which to use as my wallpaper (with yours and Spooky's permission, of course).

And I cannot wait for the photos of the abandoned amusement park - it fills me with a bit of dread, tho - there may be clowns lurking in the shadows or disguised as debris. *shudder*

OT: I have been slowly reading my way through Tales of Pain and Wonder and am enjoying seeing how your writing has changed over the years. Even the earliest stories take me out of this flesh-world and into a reality that exists, but shifted to the side. Do wish Rabbit hadn't had such an ending - must have read and reread that paragraph 6 times before I finally accepted what I read was actually there on the paper. Rabbit touched me in a way I can't quite figure out yet. Thank you for the stories.

Let me know which one, and I'll send you a high rez version of the image.

Yeah...I have grieved for Rabbit. Keep in mind, "Breakfast in the House of the Rising Sun" was written before "Lafayette," so I already knew what was in store for the poor kid. But. There you go.

This is very generous of you, thank you. *skittery happy dance* I would love to have the one posted on 06-21-08, "view south" - after the photo of the uncooperative bunnies. The mystery of what is behind the rocks, waiting for the right moment...

Hooray for Spooky being born!

about you...i can understand blah and easy self-distraction, but maybe being locked in an empty room might have to be reconsidered. Or the kiss of the muse?

The green muse, you mean?

As for the empty room, well, the hammer is at the ready.

The green muse, you mean?

If she talks to you.
Muses are bitchy from time to time. But the green muse has been considered reliable by many

Happy Birthday to Spooky, who does not have a post in her LJ for today for us to well wish her.

...it lacks the epic grace and sense of awe present in Kurbrick's film.

But how could it not lack in comparison to Kubrick? I actually saw 2010 first, because I was too young to have seen the original (no comments, please), so I rather liked the movie as sort of stand-alone. It obviously pales in comparison to 2001, but in context with the other Sci-Fi films of the early-mid 1980s, it's passable. And, surely, it is not the worst the 1980s had in store for Roy Scheider or John Lithgow.

And the ending, in context with 1984's Four More Years, I think a little optimism couldn't be misplaced.

Agreed. But, it could and should have been so much more than passable.

And, surely, it is not the worst the 1980s had in store for Roy Scheider or John Lithgow.

Again, agreed.

Well...one could argue that his sort of film is not so far removed from Xtains who look for the Second Coming to save humanity from itself. Or, for that matter, UFO cultists who look to aliens to do it, as in 2010. In that light...
