How do I feel about Congressional attempts to phase out incandescent bulbs in favour of supposedly "greener" compact fluorescent bulbs? So far, I think
stardustgirl has said it best already:
Fluorescent is not inviting. Fluorescent is Wal-Mart. It's the hospital waiting room at 3 a.m. It's the endless afternoon in school where you're stuck in a concrete box

How odd it is that, at a time when absinthe is no longer something that needs to be smuggled into the country because it will be made in the US, we may be trading in a black market for lightbulbs?

Between the imminent death of analog broadcasting and now incandescent bulbs, I recently declared my intent to stockpile phonograph records and lamp oil. My father has rechristened me Ned.
Well, I would argue that loathing fluorescent lighting does not make me a Luddite. But, if it does, so be it. :-)

And, just to compound the likely horror, I bought it at Wal-Mart ;). You can get them at Lowe's, which is, I believe, on a higher circle of hell.
Eh, either way, I just see them as transitional until LEDs get to Lowe's and Wal-Mart.
Also, I had never heard of Asia Argento before this post. I am extremely happy that I do know of her now. Yummy.

I should have realized the mercury issue, so I'll start looking for these LEDs folks mentioned.

On the topic of light bulbs, perhaps careful and judicious application of lampshades and lighting gels could ameliorate such horror from impacting you as heavily? My bedroom has florescent bulbs almost exclusively, but remains pretty warm in color. I think the manufacturers are attempting to make changes to the bulbs to make them more palatable to consumers.
I'll believe such a thing when I see it (and I haven't). But this doesn't address the mercury issue, or having to get rid of many treasured lamps that aren't compatible with the bulbs. Mostly, it doesn't address how this supposed "green" solution isn't a solution at all, only in that it's about money and those who will profit from the transition, and the misdirection, and how so much more good could be done any number of ways; for example, by greatly restricting the use of plastics.

Yes, well, look who is advising this. They are my primary source for misdirection. Good points, all.
Also, Ms. K, I am misplacing your mailing address. Might you post it for those who are not giving directly from your wishlist? Any assistance would be welcome.
