Yesterday, I wrote 1,175 words on a story that is, for now, titled "Salammbô Redux." It's the piece for
Clarkesworld Magazine, and also the final piece for the forthcoming edition of
Tales of Pain and Wonder. Likely, there will be two versions of this story. The first, shorter version will appear in Clarkesworld Magazine, and the second, longer

I only noticed this when I received royalty statements.

Penguin appears to have a really big g'dammed problem with not informing you of their decisions when it comes to edition changes in your books. I apologize for bringing up the LRM buyback scandal, but this seems to be a fortituous symptom of the same damn problem: not keeping you in the loop. I would peeve me greatly if this were happening to me. I highly doubt that non-notification would ever happen in another "art industry" (film, music, etc.) without all kinds of legal wrangling and by-your-leave from the artist.
Grr!

I knew it was a possibility, as Penguin has always purchased electronic rights to my novels. They've just never used them before, and this time I thought it odd no one bothered to inform me they were doing so. Had they told me, I could have promoted them sooner. That's my primary complaint. And I do wonder why these two and not Threshold.

I could guess, but it would be crass speculation. I was more annoyed that Penguin didn't make a phone call or an email even to your agent to let them know beforehand. I'm sure it's a contractual option, but, as you say, you could have prepared promotion for it (although, I add snarkily, isn't that their job?).

Only in theory.

The story starts with your character saying, "Exctinction protocol initiated. Begin countdown." But I could use some more dialogue there...so howzabout you kick out a chunk of dialogue for your old homebody D to open up his story? Get as freaky with it as you like! Because then I have to face the challenge of building an entire tale out of one final, despairing utterance. I will take that dare!

OK, Cait, check it out: I'll soon be wrapping up "Trois Freres" soon...which means, it's time to get cracking on "Goodnight, Antarctica"...starring you as Miskatonic U's paleontologist leader on the last, desperate exploration of the Elder Ones' Antarctican cities for evidence of how they fought back the Cthulhuoids when they invaded in the lasty Triassic.
I have so been meaning to read "Trois Freres." I started one day, and something annoying distracted me.

Okay. Give me a couple of days to think it over. It might be more a chunklet than a whole chunk, but I'll see what I can come up with!

Oh, it doesn't have to be much. Just something to get me started with. An opening line, basically.
I'll come up with something appropriately apocalyptic.
