I'm pretty sure that I do not actually hate Alabama. It terms of physical geography and wilderness, it's a beautiful place. Fabulous geology and paleontology. For an area its size, Alabama has the greatest diversity of turtle species found anywhere on Earth. I think what I hate is all the goddamn Alabamians (the ones who aren't turtles). And ( Read more... )

I would really like to give this city an identity of its own, but one that didn't scream "Toxic Cesspool of Ignorance and Hate." Do you think that's possible?

I think a few years in Birmingham would improve your opinion of Atlanta. Mostly, I find Atlanta to be generally indifferent, which is a vast improvement.

Sorry, I wasn't clear: I mean that I want to turn Atlanta from "Indifferent" to "some form of Good." The Cesspool reference was to Birmingham and the general potential for that kind of thing that lurks... everywhere, unfortunately.

Ah, okay. In that case, my answer would be no, I don't think it's possible. More's the pity.

You know why the film adaptation of Deliverance was shot in Georgia instead of Alabama, don't you? Between casting extras that could follow basic instructions and having access to electricity, Georgia was the better option. (Living in Tallahassee and catching all of the Alabama-based radio stations definitely made me appreciate Georgia a bit more, and I regret that I never had any reason to drive up to Atlanta while I was there. Of course, I was so broke back then that I couldn't bring myself to go to Orlando, and I discovered that a cousin had moved there only after I moved back to Texas.)

I'm thinking it would be nice to be able to drive to Alabama and back in a day. It would take me around 24 hours by bus to get there from here, I think. I hope the weather cooperates with you. What kind of animals are on or near the road between Atlanta and Alabama?

Armadillos, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, deer, dogs, hawks, vultures, foxes, turkeys, the usual.

Oh, and red necks.

I'd love to see how Alabama red necks compare to the red necks in upstate NY / Pennsylvania.

. The trip has been delayed as long as I can possibly delay it. I have not been back there since April 2006. I'd hoped to go a full year this time between visits. Alas, that is not to be. It has become a Necessary Expedition. We may be back tonight. We may not be back until Friday evening. I cannot yet say.

May it be easy on you.
