You should definitely check out Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw The TV Glow. A lot of coverage of the film and interviews with the director fixate on how Schoenbrun's experience as a trans woman who came out in her 30s influences the film, but the film itself speaks much more ambiguously on that subject. It's one of the very very few Twin Peaks imitators that that goes beyond visual pastiche and carves out its own identity. And I think that you’d appreciate the way the it uses fictional art/media as a portal to greater weirdness. I'd love to see what Schoenbrun might do with Red Tree or The Drowning Girl or The Prayer For 90 Cats.
