fleeting accomplishment

Yesterday, I wrote 817 words and finished Chapter Nine. Only one chapter to go. I've reach ms. page 555. Yesterday, I estimated that the finished ms., including the two appendices, would go to about 650 pages, by far my longest novel. At this point, the ms. of Daughter of Hounds is 119,600 words in length. I think that I may actually come in under ( Read more... )

If you're allowing yourself to say yet, what will the appendices in DoH cover? Color me curious ('course, I was already going to buy it)...

Appendix A will be a reprint of "The Daughter of the Four of Penatcles." Appendix B will be "The Dead and the Moonstruck." Or vice versa.

Thank you. Knowledge (to quote Animal House) is good.

A quick point on the poll, as I return to reality after a stressful week...

While I'd pay $10/month for a PDF mailing, I'd be even happier to pay $15 for the same thing plus a lovely Sub Press book at the end. Once you've commited to spending $10/month, $15 isn't so bad if there's an object at the end, and I so enjoyed the physical product that is To Charles Fort... that I'd be happy to see the work presented in physical format.

(That, and I hate PDFs. I'd rather see everything in .cbr form, but that's just me, and I understand the decision to use .pdf files.)

I too would love to see these vignettes eventually collected in an actual book, but I can't include that as part of the subscription service. At least not at this point. It's something that might come along later.

Fair enough. If you decide to do the sub service, I'm in.

I tried to beat the latest incarnation of Maester Seymour, but kept getting my eema kicked (Leh'agvoi? What am I doing wrong?)Hmm. Depends on which Maester Seymour you're talking about (I call him the "Maester with the Baster"). If it's the one where you have to run back across a bridge to help Kimahri fight him, I levelled up quite a bit first. Although the music sounds tense and Kimahri's standing there with his spear aimed at Seymour, you actually have all the time in the world. So I figured, since there was a save sphere and robots in the random encounters that give a ton of experience, I might as well hang around awhile. O'aka was even nearby in case I needed to buy more phoenix downs or something ( ... )

(continuation . . .)

So I went back to Earth Eater and got into a rhythm--I waited until everyone had Auto-Life cast on them, and then Auron would hit it once, generally doing around 6000 damage. Earth Eater retaliated, killing a random person (or sometimes two). Then I'd make sure everyone was Auto-Lifed again, and I'd do it again.

It quickly became clear to me that there was no way I could lose, as even Earth Eater's rapid counterattacks couldn't keep up with my Auto-Life and phoenix downs. But it wasn't until five hours had passed that I realised working down Earth Eater's 1.5 million hit points in slow chunks of 6000 was not a worthy use of my time. So I am in search of dark matter . . .

This is all very wonderful, Leh'agvoi, only a) I only understand about half of it and b) it really doesn't help me defeat Maester Seymour at the top of Mt. Gagazet. Where I am in the story, we've just come through the Ronso village, Kimahri has defeated his two rival, we've climbed the mountain, then Seymour shows up and claims to have slaughter all the Ronso. Then he nukes everyone. I can say that my characters aren't nearly as powerful as yours. I tend to try to play straight through a game's narrative thread. So, my Auron only has about 2500 HP, for example. I'm a relative milksop, as it were. And, from where I am, I can only go back a short ways to try and increase HP, just up and down Mt. Gagazet, which gets dull muy fast, let me tell you.

Heh. Sorry, I just got a little too excited, I think.

Ah, I'm getting the order of battles mixed up--I thought you'd already fought that one for some reason. There are just too many Seymour battles in that game . . .

It was a while ago that I fought him, but I seem to remember that it took me two tries to defeat him. My Auron wasn't at 9999 HP at that point yet, either--I think he had around 5000 or so.

Glancing at a walkthrough, I see that Bio works on this Seymour. Bio seems to be a lot more effective in this game than it was in previous Final Fantasys--if Lulu doesn't have it, see if you have some other means of poisoning him. For example, Rikku's "Use" ability might allow you to poison him with an item. I think Poison Fangs would work, which you might have if you stole from any of the wasps in the Calm Lands ( ... )

Oh, yeah, and it's good to cast Shell, too. That reduces the damage done by most spells. Although, with 2500 HP, I don't know if that would save you from Flare. Your best bet would probably be to sacrifice an Aeon or two. According to the faq, Memefit can do a lot of damage to him.
