It's shitty out there. Only 65˚F and overcast. No summer day should be saddled with this weather.

But on this day one year ago, pretty much everything was perfect, and we saw Neko Case play an outdoor show in Lowell, Massachusetts. It might have been my last best day. There were some good days in Woodstock, but I don't think any matched Lowell ( Read more... )

Thing is, though, I watch a lot of films. I've seen at least fifty since mid May.

Yesterday, I wrote. Finally.

I am intrigued by both this news and the title!

But the truth is that I've gotten rather good over the years at avoiding films I know I'll dislike.

There is wisdom in this, however indiscriminate it may seem to others. It applies to music here at home as well, where a difference of opinion lies in whether a song is enhanced merely by adding a dance beat to it...

I cannot wait to travel there along with it, when it is released.

Well, I wish my instincts were so fine tuned. I love such a broad variety that I'm sadly willing to try almost anything once, even twice. Sometimes this has been rewarding--I remember how much I hated Shah Ruk Khan the first time I saw him and now I'm quite fond of him. I also tend to think of Bernard Herrmann's initial refusal to score Taxi Driver because he thought it was going to be a movie about driving a taxi. But on the other hand, as I've been going down the list of Christopher Lee's filmography, there are quite a few I wish I'd known to give a miss, particularly the ones where the filmmakers decided they could give Lee top billing for appearing in two scenes.

I research before I watch. And sure, I undoubtedly miss a few here and there, but, overall, I think it works very well. Also, it helps that my interest in cinema is primarily American and British (with a little French and German).

Ah. I generally limit my research to filmmakers, I have a sort of a superstition about reading synopses. But my curiosity tends to bound past directors to wanting to get a feel for certain genres and movements with sometimes unfortunate results. And also sometimes I worry my hatred for certain stars and directors--like my hatred for Burt Lancaster--has caused me to miss out on gems so I watch a movie like The Crimson Pirate that ends up confirming I should keep avoiding Burt Lancaster. And yet, Kirk Douglas likes him so much and I like Kirk Douglas--all this stuff tends to muddy my instincts.
