"Le miroir casse."

A week or so ago I resolved to take a walk every day before I started working. Thing is, it's fucking cold out there. Currently, it's 43˚F, but feels like 35˚F. Yeah, that motivates me to take long, leisurely strolls about the neighborhood.

Yesterday I wrote 1,592+ words on Cherry Bomb. I passed the halfway mark. The manuscript now stands at 35, ( Read more... )

I know that a lot of people, including creators involved with the show, have been angry about how the episodes are being edited.

I didn't realize that. I'd been blaming the pacing on the scripts.

Blood Oranges has been nominated for the Romantic Times Award in the category of Urban Fantasy Novel

I hope that's hilarious. Otherwise I don't know what to do with it.

Certainly the scripts have been weak, usually, but yeah, a lot of it's editing to make the show more action oriented. This really began with the ascendancy of Moffet.

Otherwise I don't know what to do with it.

I'm tempted to withdraw, to reject the nomination. Ah, but then people would think me an ass.

Blood Oranges has been nominated for the Romantic Times Award in the category of Urban Fantasy Novel (they have a baffling number of award categories), I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how I feel about this

Well, congrats anyway.

And the most recent episodes are horribly frenetic and devoid of much in the way of characterization.

Yeah--that frenetic editing is something I've come to despise in a lot of modern film and television and it can be particularly bad on Doctor Who. And the lack of characterisation was a huge problem for me, particularly when it came to River Song. Too much chorus, not enough verse. Things do get a little better when Clara is properly introduced. Though she may just be good by comparison.

I do very much hope that the 12th Doctor's companion comes without a Rory Williams or Mickey Smith attached.

Well, Capaldi's first companion will be Clara and so far there's been no real third wheel around. Hopefully that continues.

You're too quick to generalize here.

In what way? That I've referred to what I dislike in modern film and television as frenetic editing? Do you feel that what I dislike actually refers to a more complex bundle of techniques? I'm not sure what you're suggesting.

I do not see that this in any way characterizes, generally, modern film and television. That's how. And I suspect I watch much more of it than do you. I also spend a great deal of time watching old films.

Congrats on the 12 years and the "Cherry Bomb" word count.

As for the nomination ... well, methinks somebody obviously missed the point. Or said somebody is trying to get in on the joke.

Congratulations on the 12th anniversary. In a world that's migrated to FB and twitter, I still look forward to reading your blog.

Re: the nomination, I think Sonya expressed it best, so I'll echo her.

Re: the new Doctor, I'm very much looking forward to Doctor 12. I've read/seen interviews with Matt Smith about his love of physical comedy and his desire to insert that into his Doctor. I wonder how much of the editing related to that desire for things to be physical and frenetic. I miss the depth and Eccleston and Tennant brought to the role.
