Tuesday Talking Points

Planeswalker Points
Magic is switching from an ELO type system to one that rewards playing. The new system rewards playing, which is smart on both rewards both business and fun interests. It also appeals to the level up system of RPG's. I guess newer players, though, will never know the joy of breaking the 1800 barrier.

I'm not sure that building up points is as daunting as it seems for new players.

Sure, if you're looking only at Lifetime total, it's going to be tough to catch up to someone who's been grinding for 15 years.

However, for GP byes, PT Invites, since they're basing it off of your competitive points for a season, new players have just as good a chance as older grinders.

Also, you can get a bunch of points for doing well at bigger events. I picked up 368 points for GP Providence, for example.

I actually haven't been playing sanctioned events that long (maybe 4 years?) and I'm up to level 36 (8 points away from 37) now?

Nice, I'm only level 31 after playing for 12 something years but they've mostly been smaller events and sporadically at that so that makes sense.

I'm interested to see how their Friday Night Magic championship works out. Seems like it may favor those with bigger player populations.

Yeah and for the bigger invite/bye stuff, it's definitely better for new players since people who have been sitting on high ratings forever won't be eating up as many invite slots. I saw an interesting statistic on PT Philly - something like only 42 or so of the top 100 invite through rating players showed up...
