If the context is tax law, I bet there's a section of the tax code that says, "For the purposes of this section, R&D is defined as…"

Well, having run out of time to write it, I didn't have a chance to go off and research the tax code. But NOW, now I have all the time in the world, and I imagine I'll have to fill one of these things out next year too, and I'm honestly curious how they possibly make a reasonable interpretation of what "Research & Development" IS when it comes to software....

So yeah, I'll have to go looking for that. Anyone have any spare google-fu to point me in the right direction?

I think your answers were probably better than mine, if that's any consolation. My replies degenerated towards the end to where I pointed out they were accusing me of having prescience.

I had to console myself with tequila afterwards.

Yeah, it seemed like the questions were leading you towards some sort of "Yes, we evaluated the potential alternatives, and this one would suck and that one would be awesome, and so we did the awesome thing". When it seems like the whole point of _research_ would be that you wouldn't really know up front what you were getting or where you were going or which direction would be better. Or even having any particular goal at all, really.

Which is why I had that we-aren't-speaking-the-same-language-are-we feeling the whole time I was writing it. What does "research" mean to you, oh accountant people?
