Chapter Two
“Hey Adie, do you think I should tell Mike I’m a guy? Or what?” Billie said leaning over to his best friend during class.
Adrienne shrugged in response then threw a piece of paper at Billie. “Keep pretending. It’ll be fun, and a laugh all around.”
“Okay, so when he calls just act like…” Billie trailed off and thought for a moment. “I have no good girl examples.” He said biting his lip.
She threw a pencil at him. “Excuse YOU! What about me Asstrong?”
“You?” Billie asked surprised, then burst out laughing.
“Mr. Armstrong, Miss. Nesser, is there something you two would like to share with the class?” Mr. Cartwell asked looking at the two of them.
Adrienne giggled. “No Mr. Cartwell.” She said in her sweetest voice, then smiled at him. He sighed then went back to writing on the old blackboard.
“Suck up.” Billie coughed.
Adrienne threw a book at him. “Fuck you.”
Billie raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t think you liked me that way, Adie.”
Adrienne growled at him and turned around, facing the class for the first time the whole period. Then she flipped him off. Billie just grinned in satisfaction. He knew Adrienne had a small crush on him, she had since they were in fourth grade. He felt something for her, he just didn’t want to ruin their friendship, besides the fact that he knew Tre liked her also.
*****After Class*****
After class was over Adrienne stalked out of the room, Billie close behind her. “I’m sorry Adie, I really am. I didn’t think it would upset you so much. You know I love you, please don’t be angry.” Billie said catching up to her and grabbing her by the arm.
“I’m not mad Billie, just… Don’t you think of me as a girl? Or am I just one of the guys?” She asked looking away from him.
“Adrienne, your one of my best friends… Come on, let’s go talk about this somewhere else.” He said pulling her outside and to the old playground.
They sat down on two swings, side by side. “Adrienne, I didn’t mean for it to come out that way. You’re my best friend, you have been since kindergarten. Until Tre came along you were my ONLY friend. You know I think the world of you and even more.” Billie said trying to get Adrienne to look at him.
Finally when she wouldn’t, he touched her face lightly and she turned her head. She was crying. “Adie I’m so fucking sorry, please don’t cry. You know I hate seeing you cry. I can’t deal with girls crying, especially you.”
“So you do think of me as a girl?” She asked.
“Of course. I wouldn’t like you if you weren’t. You’d be a sucky guy anyways.” Billie said, smiling at Adrienne.
She gave him a week smile in return. He whipped away her tears with his thumb and looked into her eyes. “You know I love you Adie. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”
She looked deep into his emerald eyes and smiled a real, true smile. The smile only Billie gets. “I love you too Billie. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Come on chick, let’s get back inside. Tre’ll be wondering where we are.” Billie said standing up and pulling Adrienne into a hug.
Chapter Three
Billie rushed home after school, quickly changing and waiting by the phone. He hopped Mike would call him soon. After five minutes of sitting there, the phone rang.
“Hello?” Billie asked answering the phone.
“Hey is Billie there?” Mike’s already familiar voice sounded.
“This is… her.” Billie said giggling.
“Hey you.”
“Hey to you too.”
“So I was wondering if you’d want to go out tonight?” Mike said clearing his throat, and sounding a little nervous.
Billie giggled again. “Sure. Where should I meet you?”
“How bout at the movie theater? There’s a movie I want to see playing at seven. Want to go?”
“Sure. Meet you there.”
“Bye Billie.”
“Bye Mike.”
Billie hung up the phone and quickly picked it back up, dialing Adrienne’s phone number.
“Hey Billie.” Adrienne said, as soon as she answered.
“How do you always know?”
“I’m magic?”
“Whatever, anyway, I’m going out with Mike tonight and I need your help getting ready. Can ya come over?” Billie asked hopefully.
Adrienne sighed, but Billie didn’t notice. “Sure, I guess.”
“Good, oh and Adie?”
“What now?”
“Can I borrow a dress?”
“Sure. I’ll bring one over.”
“Kay, bye Adie.”
“Bye Bill.”
