I have a thing for female characters who like to give their male counterparts shit and are completely unapologetic about it, so Anya fits right up that alley. ;) I also love that family and belonging is what she really cares about; giving up her crown and the power that came with it for Dmitri really shows a lot about her and what she values. And, to be completely superficial, I love the sound of her voice. Meg Ryan FTW.
I would have to agree that Sally is the BMOAF. It would've been so easy for Riordan to write her out after the first book - have Percy stay at Camp Half-Blood all year around, kill her off, or initially have written her like all of the other Crappy Mortal Parents we saw in the series - but he kept her around and made her into such a good character. She could've easily been resentful of Percy for giving her a crap hand at life, but she's not. She does everything for him, embraces him for who he is, and, I think most importantly, trusts him to come back to her safely and do the right thing. Out of all the female characters, she's probably the strongest emotionally to put up with all the crap that's been thrown at her and still come out so positive in the end. Plus, she's not useless or stupid like some YA fantasy parents are when it comes to their kids super powers and/or secret life - she knows more about what's going down than Percy does half the time in the first couple of books and she can clearly handle herself in a fight if it
( ... )
Yup, I think the fact that she was a "clear-sighted" mortal also helped, and it was very interesting/awesome that Riordan included it. Also, she totally deserved a good guy like Paul to make her happy. Thank you, RR! ;] Thanks for the analysis--I agree with every bit!
